Step 1 - Design the Layout

Before you grab a shovel or cut a line, pin down the exact point of failure. Use these three diagnostic rules to find the damage and map your repair.

  • Trace the pressure drop. If a whole zone won't pop up or runs weak, don't assume the heads are bad. Look upstream toward the valve box. A cracked lateral line or a failing valve diaphragm bleeds off pressure before water ever reaches the heads.
  • Flag the physical damage. Run the problem zone and walk the line. Pooling mud points to a cracked underground pipe; water shooting straight up means a missing nozzle or snapped riser; water bubbling out of the top cap means blown internal wiper seals. Mark each failure with a landscape flag.
  • Isolate valve failures. If one zone won't turn on from the controller — or won't shut off after the cycle — the problem is inside the valve box, so plan to repair or swap that zone valve. If several zones fire at once, the controller's wiring or programming is likely shorted.
Step 2 - Choose Your Equipment

With your repair points flagged, gather your replacement parts. Work through the checklist for heads, repair fittings, and field tools.

Step 3 - Install Everything

Before you buy a single fixture, make a plan. These three rules give you a layout that reads as intentional and skips the most common placement mistakes.

  • Map the path. Walk it at night with a flashlight. Find the tripping hazards — steps, grade changes, low-hanging foliage. Those are your must-light focal points.
  • Space the lighting. Avoid the "runway" look. Don't set fixtures directly across from each other in parallel lines. Stagger them in a zigzag along the path, 6 to 8 feet apart, so the pools of light overlap softly.
  • Test the placement. Mark each planned fixture with a stake or flag during the day. Step back and view the path from both your front door and the street to be sure the layout frames the landscape naturally.
