Repair Couplings

Fixing a break in an existing irrigation line is a different problem than installing new pipe. The line is already buried, the ends of the break are fixed in place, and there's rarely enough slack to pull the pipe apart and reglue a standard coupling the way you could with a brand-new run — which is exactly the gap repair couplings are built to close.

A slip fix coupling is designed for this situation specifically: it slides over both cut ends of a rigid PVC line without needing the pipe to move or flex, so a break can be repaired in place without excavating a longer section just to create working room. Because there's no need to bend or pull the pipe into position, slip fix couplings are usually the fastest option for a straightforward break in a straight run.

Expansion couplings solve a slightly different problem — they're built with some give built into the fitting itself, which is useful when a repair needs to account for minor pipe movement, whether from ground settling, temperature swings, or a section of line that's slightly misaligned after years underground. The extra flex reduces stress on the new joint compared to a rigid coupling forced into a tight fit.

Compression fittings take a third approach entirely, using a mechanical seal — typically a rubber gasket compressed by a threaded fitting — instead of solvent welding or barbed insertion. This makes them useful for repairs where solvent welding isn't practical, such as a wet trench, cold weather that slows cement curing, or a quick fix that needs to be functional again immediately rather than waiting for a solvent weld to fully cure.

Matching the repair coupling to your pipe material matters as much as the repair type: couplings built for rigid PVC won't seal correctly on flexible Poly pipe, and vice versa.
