Manual Valves

A manual valve does the same basic job as an electric one — opens and closes to control water flow — but without a solenoid or controller in between. That makes it slower to operate across multiple zones on a schedule, but it also makes it the simplest, most direct way to shut water off completely, which is exactly why every irrigation system should have at least one accessible manual valve as a main shut-off point.

Ball valves use a rotating ball with a hole through the center; turning the handle a quarter turn fully opens or closes the flow, which makes them the fastest option when you need water stopped immediately — during a repair, a leak, or before winterizing a system. Globe valves use a different internal mechanism that allows more precise, gradual flow adjustment rather than a hard on/off, useful in situations where throttling flow matters more than simply stopping it. Angle valves combine shut-off with a directional change, letting a line turn a corner and control flow at the same point rather than needing a separate fitting for each function.

Material affects how a manual valve holds up under repeated use. Brass valves resist corrosion, handle higher pressure, and generally outlast plastic in a valve that gets used often — a main shut-off, for example, might get operated dozens of times a year. Heavy-duty plastic valves cost less and work well for shut-offs that are used infrequently, where the extra durability of brass matters less than the lower price.

Every system needs at least one accessible manual shut-off, ideally near the point where water enters the property, so it can be reached quickly in an emergency without having to locate every Electric Valve in the system first.
