Before you buy a single fixture, you need a plan. Follow these three design rules to sketch out a layout that looks professional and avoids common DIY placement mistakes.
- Map the Path: Walk your path at night with a flashlight. Identify high-risk tripping hazards like steps, elevation changes, or low-hanging foliage. These are your mandatory lighting focal points.
- Space the Lighting: Avoid the "airport runway" effect. Do not place fixtures directly across from each other in parallel lines. Instead, stagger your lights in a zigzag pattern along the path, spacing them roughly 6 to 8 feet apart to allow the pools of light to softly overlap.
- Test the Placement: Use wooden stakes or flags to mark your planned fixture locations during the day. Step back and look at the path from both your front door and the street to ensure the layout frames your landscape naturally.
Now that you know how many lights you need, build your low-voltage system. Work through the checklist for fixtures, power, and cable.
1. Select Your Fixture Style
Pro Tip: Stick to one fixture family for a cohesive look. Choose path lights with a "hat" or shroud — it aims light down onto the walking surface and stops the glare you'd otherwise catch walking toward them.
2. Choose Your Power Hub (The Transformer)
Pro Tip: Add up the total wattage of the fixtures you chose. Never load a transformer past 80% of its rated capacity. If your lights total 40 watts, a 75-watt transformer leaves safe headroom for adding more later.
3. Secure Your Cable & Connectors
Pro Tip: Low-voltage wire gets thinner as the gauge number climbs. For standard pathway runs under 100 feet, 12-gauge (12/2) wire is the standard for avoiding voltage drop — the reason the last light on a line can look dimmer than the first.
Gear on-site? Follow this sequence to wire your low-voltage system without hiring an electrician.
- Install the transformer. Mount it on an exterior wall at least 12 inches above the ground, near an outdoor GFCI outlet. Don't plug it in yet.
- Run the wire. Lay the 12/2 main cable loosely along the ground, tucking it behind shrubs and alongside your layout stakes. Leave 12 to 18 inches of slack at each fixture so you can reposition a light later if plants grow over it.
- Test the system. Splice your fixtures into the main line with waterproof gel connectors. With everything connected, plug in the transformer and switch it on. Check the system at dusk and fine-tune the aim, then bury the wire under 3 inches of mulch or soil and check it off your Greenlist.
