Drippers and emitters control exactly how much water reaches each plant in a drip zone - a fixed rate, drop by drop, right at the root instead of sprayed across the surface. Pressure-compensating emitters keep output consistent even when a line runs long or uphill, so the first plant on the run gets the same amount of water as the last. Drippers/Emitters
An emitter's job is simple on paper — release water at a fixed rate — but doing that consistently across a whole drip line is harder than it sounds. Water pressure naturally drops as it travels down a line and rises with elevation, which means an emitter at the end of a long or uphill run gets less flow than one near the valve, unless something compensates for it.
That's what pressure-compensating emitters are built to do. Instead of releasing water at a rate that depends entirely on the pressure reaching them, they regulate their own output internally, so every emitter on the line delivers close to the same amount of water regardless of its position. For longer runs, sloped beds, or zones with a mix of close and distant plants, pressure-compensating emitters are usually worth the extra cost over basic fixed-flow versions.
Single-outlet emitters attach at one point and water one plant — the standard choice for containers, individual shrubs, or trees. Multi-outlet emitters split a single connection point into several smaller lines, which is useful for watering a cluster of plants from one location on the main tubing without punching multiple holes into it. Flow rate matters as much as the outlet count: a 1 GPH (gallon per hour) emitter suits small plants and containers, while larger shrubs or trees typically need 2 GPH or higher to get enough water to the root zone during a normal cycle.
Emitters connect directly into Tubing, and clogging is the most common failure point — sediment in the water supply or debris introduced during installation can block the outlet over time, which is why most drip systems downstream of a Control & Conversion Kit filter run cleaner and longer.
