Wire connectors join your controller wiring to each zone valve — and they're usually the first thing to fail when a zone stops responding. Standard wire nuts aren't built for what's underground: constant moisture, soil contact, and years of buried exposure. Shop waterproof, gel-filled wire connectors built for direct burial, sized for your wire gauge and conductor count, so your splice outlasts the wire around it.

A bad wire splice is one of the most common causes of an irrigation zone that won't turn on — and one of the hardest to diagnose once it's buried. These connectors are built specifically for direct burial: a gel or silicone fill displaces moisture around the splice and seals out water and soil contact, unlike standard wire nuts or electrical tape, which break down underground within a season or two. Match the connector to your wire gauge and the number of conductors you're joining at that point — most zone splices involve two wires, but a common-wire connection at a valve manifold may need to join three or more. If you're troubleshooting a dead zone, a corroded or improperly sealed splice is worth checking before you assume the valve itself has failed.
