Analyze System
System basics
A landscape lighting system runs on three parts: a transformer that steps household power down to a safe low-voltage output, wire that carries that power to each fixture, and fixtures that shape where the light actually lands. Getting the sizing right on all three keeps the system reliable for years.
It depends on the total wattage of your fixtures, not he fixture count. A transformer needs enough capacity to power every fixture on the run without overloading it, and most systems leave room for future additions. Use our Transformer Sizing Center to calculate the right capacity for your project.
Transformers & Wiring
Add up the wattage of every fixture the transformer will power, then choose a transformer rated above that total to leave headroom for voltage drop and future fixtures. Undersizing leads to dim or flickering lights. Use our Transformer Sizing Center to calculate the right capacity before you buy.
Yes, run length matters as much as fixture load. Thinner wire works for short runs with light loads, while longer runs or higher wattage need a thicker gauge to prevent voltage loss. Use our Wire Gauge Finder to match gauge to your specific run length and load.
Voltage drop happens when power weakens over the length of a wire run, causing fixtures farther from the transformer to dim or flicker. The fix is usually a thicker wire gauge or a multi-tap transformer setting. Use our Voltage Drop Analysis tool to check your system before installing.
Fixtures
Path lights sit low and light walkways and borders from above. Accent and up lights point upward to highlight trees, architecture, or texture. Spotlights and flood lights throw a wider, brighter beam, typically used for security or broad coverage across a larger area.
Spacing depends on each fixture's beam spread and the effect you're going for, a tight spacing for a continuous glow along a path, wider spacing for individual highlights. Use our Beam Spread & Spacing tool to calculate the right distance for the fixtures you're installing.
In most cases, yes, since low-voltage fixtures run on a standard voltage output. The main exception is proprietary smart systems, like FX Luminaire's Luxor program, which are built to work as a matched ecosystem. Check compatibility before mixing brands on any app-connected or zoning system.
Bulbs & Lamps
Bulb type and wattage vary by fixture, and using the wrong one can affect brightness, color temperature, or even damage the fixture. Check your fixture's spec sheet for the exact lamp size before replacing a bulb, since manufacturers typically list an exact number for compatible replacements.
Many halogen fixtures can be converted to LED with the right replacement lamp which cuts energy use and extends bulb life significantly. Some fixtures require an LED-compatible transformer to avoid flickering. Check your transformer's compatibility before converting an entire system to LED.
Timers & Seasonal
A standard timer runs on fixed on and off times you set manually. An astronomical timer calculates sunrise and sunset automatically based on your location, so it adjusts year-round without reprogramming. See our full guide on programming an astronomical timer for setup instructions.
Yes, in cold climates, freeze and thaw cycles can damage wiring, fixtures, and connections if the system isn't prepped for winter. The process typically takes under 90 minutes. See our full guide on winterizing outdoor lighting for step-by-step instructions.
Buying & Logistics
Pro Pricing and Bulk Pricing are both available to any customer with a free Greenlist account, no contractor license required. Create an account, login, and pricing updates automatically on eligible products. There's no minimum spend or order size needed to unlock it.
You can order everything on a full system, fixtures, transformer, wire, and lamps, in one checkout. Most orders ship together from our Wisconsin warehouse, though some items may ship separately depending on size. Orders placed before 12pm EST ship same day.
