Low-voltage landscape lighting is designed to run year-round in most climates. Cold weather does not damage a properly installed system. But cold-climate properties benefit from a brief winter prep that addresses the specific issues snow, ice, and freeze-thaw cycles create. The work takes 60-90 minutes once a year and prevents most cold-weather service calls. Here is the workflow.
What Cold Actually Does to a System
Low-voltage landscape lighting is built for outdoor use. The components handle temperature ranges from well below zero to high summer heat. The cold-related issues are not about temperature directly, but about what cold conditions produce:
- Snow accumulation: covers fixtures, blocks light output, and pulls cables in spring as it melts and shifts
- Ice loading: weighs down branch-mounted fixtures and stresses cable runs
- Freeze-thaw cycles: move soil, which can pull splices apart, lift fixtures, and damage buried wire
- Plowing and snow removal: cuts wires, breaks fixtures, and damages fixture stakes
- De-icing chemicals: corrode connectors and accelerate brass and copper oxidation
- Reduced viewing angles: sunset earlier and snow cover changes which fixtures matter visually

When to Winterize
In most US cold-climate regions:

Spot Lights and Uplights
- Aim away from areas where snow will pile up directly in front of the fixture
- For tree uplights, verify the aim is still correct (trees move slightly as they prepare for winter dormancy)
Tree-Mounted Downlights
- Inspect the mounting strap or fastener for tension. Branches contract slightly in cold weather, which can loosen straps
- Verify the downlight aim is still correct after fall canopy changes (leaf drop on deciduous trees changes the light pattern dramatically)
- For evergreen trees, verify the fixture is not buried in winter foliage that has grown around it during the year
Step 4: Mark Fixture Locations for Snow Removal
If your property has snow plowed, blown, or shoveled, fixtures in the path of snow removal are at risk:
- Path lights along driveways and walkways
- Bed-edge accent lights near where snow gets piled
- Step lights on stairs that get shoveled
Mark these fixtures with tall, flexible driveway markers or snow stakes. The markers stay visible above snow level and warn snow removal equipment and personnel to avoid hitting the fixtures.

If your system is on a fixed-time schedule (uncommon but possible), adjust the on-time earlier for winter. Most users find that an astronomical timer's automatic adjustment is preferable.
Consider also:
- Off-time may need adjustment if entertaining patterns change in winter
- Holiday lighting may overlay the regular schedule and require coordination
- Some properties prefer extended winter run hours for security and visibility
Step 7: De-Icing Chemical Protection
If you use salt or chemical de-icers near driveways or walks:
- Note which fixtures are in the area of typical chemical exposure
- Plan to rinse those fixtures with fresh water in spring before chemical residue accumulates
- Avoid piling treated snow directly on fixtures or buried wire
De-icing chemicals accelerate corrosion of brass, copper and aluminum fixtures. The damage is gradual but cumulative.
Step 8: Document the State of the System
For any major changes (fixture relocations, new components, repair history), update the system documentation. The annual winterization is a natural time to refresh records:
- Bulb age (note when bulbs were installed)
- Connector age (note when splices were updated)
- Transformer service date
- Any damage repaired during the year
The documentation supports faster service if anything fails during winter when access is limited.
What You Do Not Need to Do
Low-voltage landscape lighting does not require:
- Draining (there is nothing to drain on a low-voltage system)
- Disconnecting the transformer (leave it running; the system is designed for year-round operation)
- Removing fixtures (they are designed to stay in place)
- Wrapping or insulating components (the components are designed for outdoor temperature extremes)
Some homeowners assume that landscape lighting needs winter shutdown like irrigation systems. It does not. The system is built to run continuously through cold weather.
During Winter
Check the system briefly every few weeks:
- Are the lights coming on at the expected time?
- Is anything obviously broken (broken fixture from snow load, ice damage)?
- Are there areas of yard where snow is starting to bury fixtures?
