An irrigation pump adds pressure or draws water from a source when a property's water supply on its own isn't enough to run a system correctly - whether that's boosting weak municipal pressure for a larger zone count, or pulling water from a well or pond instead of a municipal line entirely. Without adequate pressure, sprinkler heads and drip emitters can't deliver the flow and coverage they're designed for, no matter how well the rest of the system is laid out. Pumps
Most residential irrigation systems run fine on municipal water pressure alone, but a few situations call for a pump to make up the difference. A large property with more zones than the municipal supply can support at once, a system drawing water from a well or pond instead of a city line, or a layout with significant elevation change that eats into available pressure by the time water reaches the far end of a zone — all of these are common reasons a system needs a pump rather than relying on supply pressure alone.
Sizing a pump correctly comes down to matching two numbers to your system's actual requirements: flow rate, measured in gallons per minute, and pressure, measured in PSI. Undersizing either one means a pump that runs but still can't deliver the coverage a zone was designed for — heads that don't pop up fully, or a pattern that falls short of its rated radius. Oversizing wastes energy and can create pressure high enough to damage fittings or blow apart connections not rated for it, which is why matching a pump to your specific zone layout matters more than simply buying the largest available option.
If a pump is drawing water from a well, pond, or other non-potable source and that water ever connects to or crosses with a potable supply line, proper Backflow Prevention becomes essential — not optional — to keep that water from ever reaching a drinking water system. This is worth confirming with a professional or your local water authority before installation, since the requirements differ meaningfully from a standard municipal-supply irrigation system.
Once a pump brings water up to the pressure and flow a system needs, the rest of the system — Electric Valves, sprinkler heads, and drip components — functions the same way it would on municipal pressure, scheduled and controlled the same way through a standard controller.
