Sensors and expansion modules extend what a controller can do — they add the ability to react to real conditions and manage more zones than the controller shipped with. Rain sensors pause a cycle automatically when it's already raining; flow meters detect a spike in water use that usually signals a broken pipe or stuck valve. A controller runs on the schedule it's given, but that schedule doesn't automatically know it rained overnight or that a valve is stuck open. Sensors and expansion accessories close that gap, adding a layer of awareness and capacity on top of the base controller.
Rain sensors are the most common addition for good reason: they interrupt a scheduled cycle when there's already been enough rainfall to skip watering, which prevents the common (and easily noticed) problem of a system running full zones during or right after a storm. Most mount outside, sense actual rainfall rather than relying on a forecast, and reset automatically once conditions dry out — no manual override needed after each rain event.
Flow meters take a different approach: instead of reacting to weather, they monitor how much water is actually moving through the system in real time. A sudden jump in flow on a zone that hasn't changed usually points to a broken lateral line or a valve that isn't closing fully — problems that can run up a water bill for weeks before anyone notices without a flow meter flagging the spike.
For systems that have outgrown their original station count, expansion modules add capacity to an existing controller rather than requiring a full replacement — a practical option when a landscape plan grows to include more zones than the Residential or Commercial controller was originally sized for. Heavy-duty pedestals protect the controller housing itself in exposed outdoor locations or commercial sites where the unit needs to stand up to traffic and weather.
