Positioned low and aimed downward, they light the ground directly in front of and around the fixture rather than casting light outward, which keeps a path lit without creating glare for anyone walking it. Path Lights
A path light's job is narrow but important: light the ground directly around a walkway so it's safe to see and walk at night, without throwing glare into anyone's eyes or overpowering the rest of a lighting design. Most path lights aim straight down or at a slight angle, using a shielded lens or hood to control where the light actually lands rather than letting it scatter in every direction.
Spacing matters more for path lights than almost any other fixture type in a landscape lighting system, since the goal is even, continuous illumination along the entire route rather than isolated pools of light with dark gaps between them. Spacing too far apart leaves stretches of path that are effectively unlit; spacing too close creates a runway effect that can look more like an airport taxiway than a garden path. The right spacing depends on the fixture's beam spread and mounting height, which is worth checking against the specific model before finalizing a layout.
Because path lights sit low to the ground in high-traffic areas — along walkways, driveways, and garden borders — they take more physical abuse than most other fixtures: lawn equipment, foot traffic, sprinkler overspray, and constant ground moisture. Weather-resistant housings and corrosion-resistant materials matter more here than almost anywhere else in a lighting system, since a fixture that fails becomes both a dark spot in the path and a tripping hazard.
