Step 1 - Design the Layout

A sprinkler system is only as good as its plan. Map it right and you head off dry patches and wasted water before you pick up a shovel. Sketch your layout and mark your zones using these three rules.

  • Measure flow and pressure. Before you place a single head, find out what your yard can deliver. Check your water pressure (PSI) with a gauge on your outdoor spigot, then time how long it takes to fill a 5-gallon bucket to get your gallons per minute (GPM). Those two numbers set how many heads one line can run at once.
  • Split your yard into zones. Don't run the whole yard off one line. Group your property into zones by sun exposure and plant type. Your front lawn, shady backyard, and flower beds each belong on their own valve so they water on their own schedule.
  • Plan for head-to-head coverage. Space every head so its spray reaches the base of the next one over. That 100% overlap is what gives you even coverage and keeps brown halos from forming in summer heat.
Step 2 - Choose your Equipment

Zones mapped and spacing set? Now gather your components. Work through the checklist to pick your heads, controller, valves, and piping.

Step 3 - Install Everything

Components on-site and layout lines marked? Follow this sequence to trench, assemble, and tune the system.

  • Trench the lines and set the valves. Dig main and lateral trenches 8 to 12 inches deep so future aeration and mowing won't reach your pipes. Group the inline valves in a buried, accessible manifold valve box near your main water tap.
  • Assemble the pipe and heads. Lay out the network and make your connections. Tie heads to the lateral lines with flexible swing pipe — it cushions each head and keeps the underground PVC from cracking when a mower rolls over it.
  • Flush the system and adjust. Before you thread on the final nozzles, run each zone for 10 seconds to clear dirt, rocks, and debris from the pipes. Once the lines run clean, install your nozzles, program your controller, and check it off your Greenlist.
