Before digging, you need to know how the water is behaving. Different pooling problems require completely different drainage methods.
- For pooling gutters & downspouts (Point Source Collection): Don't let roof water dump straight onto your foundation. Route downspouts directly into closed Catch Basins or downspout adapters, then pipe the water away using smooth-wall PVC or solid corrugated pipe.
- For soggy lawns & swampy low spots (Subsurface Collection): If water is pooling in a broad, flat area of the lawn, you need a French Drain. This involves digging a trench, lining it with non-woven geotextile fabric, laying a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel, and wrapping it like a burrito to let water seep in from below while keeping dirt out.
- For pooling on concrete, patios, or driveways (Surface Collection): Water running off hardscapes needs to be intercepted before it reaches the lawn or garage. Install a narrow, flat Channel Drain (trench drain) flush with the concrete surface to capture sheet-flow runoff.

1. Select Your Water Collection Points
Pro Tip: For downspouts and yard low points, a 9" x 9" or 12" x 12" catch basin collects debris before it clogs your underground pipes. For driveways, choose heavy-duty plastic or metal channel grates rated for vehicle traffic loads.
2. Choose Your Piping & Filtration Fabric
Pro Tip: Always use non-woven geotextile fabric for French drains. Woven fabric is for weed control and doesn't let water pass through quickly enough, which will cause your drain to fail. Use solid pipe for carrying water long distances, and perforated pipe only for absorbing ground water.
3. Secure Your Fittings & Discharge Emitters
Pro Tip: Every drainage line needs an exit point. Instead of leaving an open pipe end that invites rodents and leaves to clog your system, terminate your line in the lawn with a spring-loaded Pop-Up Emitter. It stays flat to allow lawnmowers to pass over safely, rising only when water pressure pushes it open.
A successful drainage installation relies entirely on gravity. Use these three physical rules to ensure your system flows perfectly and never backs up.
- Establish Your Slope (The Pitch): Rule of Thumb: 1% Minimum Slope. Water will not flow uphill. Your trench must slope downward toward your discharge point at a minimum rate of 1/4 inch of drop per foot of run (approximately a 1% slope). Use a line level, transition transit, or a simple string line to verify your trench depth gets deeper as it moves away from the source.
- Build the Foundation & Fabric Wrap:For French Drains. Line your dug trench with non-woven geotextile fabric, leaving plenty of excess fabric overlapping the sides of the trench. Pour a 2-inch bedding layer of washed round river rock ($1/2\text{-inch}$ to $1.5\text{-inch}$ aggregate) over the fabric. Lay your perforated pipe on top of this gravel layer with the holes facing down (this allows the water level to rise evenly into the pipe).
- Backfill, Cover, and Flush:Protect the Line. Fill the rest of the trench around the pipe with river rock, leaving about 2 inches of clearance at the top. Fold the excess geotextile fabric over the top of the gravel like a burrito to seal out dirt and silt. Do a test flush: Run a garden hose down your catch basin or pipe inlet to make sure water flows freely out of the pop-up emitter before you cover the top with soil and sod.
Why structural fabric matters: Wrapping your gravel and pipe with professional-grade non-woven fabric is the single most important step. Without it, surrounding soil and clay particles will wash into your gravel pockets, completely clogging the system within 2 to 3 years.
