Wiring Standards
In wire sizing, the smaller the number, the thicker the wire. A 12-gauge wire is much thicker and can carry more power than a 16-gauge wire. Thicker wire is essential for long runs to prevent heat buildup.
Electricity loses "pressure" as it travels. Thicker wire has less resistance, meaning more voltage actually reaches your lights or valves. If your run is over 100 feet, always go one size thicker than you think you need.
Never use standard indoor wire outside. Ensure your wire is UL Listed for Direct Burial. This means the protective jacket is designed to withstand moisture and soil chemicals for decades.
When burying wire, leave an extra 2–3 feet of "slack" coiled at each fixture or valve. If you ever need to move the component or repair a connection, you won't have to dig up the entire line.
