Backflow Preventers for Irrigation: Types, Requirements & Installation
Backflow prevention is not optional on a properly installed irrigation system. Many states require it by plumbing code. The reason is direct: irrigation water is in contact with soil, fertilizers, herbicides and organic matter. Without a mechanical barrier, conditions exist where that water can reverse direction and enter the potable supply.
What Backflow Is
Backflow occurs when water flows in the wrong direction through a cross-connection — back from the irrigation system into the home's drinking water lines.
Two pressure conditions cause it. The first is back-pressure: downstream pressure in the irrigation system rises above supply pressure, reversing flow. This can happen when pumps activate, when thermal expansion occurs in boiler-connected systems or when water demand elsewhere on the supply line drops abruptly.
The second is back-siphonage: a sudden drop in supply pressure creates a vacuum that draws water back from the irrigation system. Supply pressure drops during high-demand events such as main breaks, hydrant use for firefighting or large simultaneous draws on the line.
Why Irrigation Systems Are a Specific Risk
The contamination concern is not theoretical. Irrigation water carries whatever has been applied to the landscape — fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides and biological material from soil contact. An unprotected cross-connection allows that water to enter the potable supply under the right pressure conditions.
The exposure risk extends beyond a single household. Depending on system configuration and supply line topology, contamination events can affect neighboring properties or shared supply infrastructure.
The Main Types of Backflow Preventers
State and local plumbing codes specify which devices are acceptable for a given application. The three principal mechanical types are:
- Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly (RPZ): The most protective option, required in many jurisdictions for irrigation systems using chemical injection. Contains two independent check valves and a relief valve between them. If either check fails, the relief valve discharges to atmosphere rather than allowing contamination.
- Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly (PVB): Effective against back-siphonage. Must be installed above the highest downstream outlet. Not suitable for systems with chemical injections or in applications where back pressure is possible.
- Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA): Suitable for low-hazard cross-connections. Provides protection against back-pressure and back-siphonage but without the relief valve present in an RPZ.
Residential dual check valves are a secondary category appropriate for low-risk residential supply connections where local code permits them.
All new and existing irrigation systems should be fitted with an approved, properly maintained backflow prevention assembly. Consult local plumbing code to confirm which device is required for the specific installation.
