Landscape Erosion Control: Drainage Products and Plants That Hold Soil

Erosion is a compounding problem. Once a slope or bed loses its surface cover, the next rain event removes more soil, widens the exposed area and makes the next event worse. The goal is to interrupt that cycle before the damage becomes structural — before it reaches the foundation, before the slope fails and before the landscape becomes unusable.

Why It Matters

Soil that washes away takes nutrients with it. Plants that depend on that soil show the effects — thinner growth, increased susceptibility to stress and eventual failure. On slopes near structures, eroding soil can undercut foundations and footings. In planting beds, repeated erosion events gradually reduce bed depth and expose root systems.

Controlling erosion is not cosmetic. It is maintenance.

Drainage Solutions for Erosion Control

Redirecting water before it becomes erosive runoff is the most effective approach on most residential properties. Four products address this at different scales:

French Drains. A perforated pipe buried in a gravel-filled trench intercepts subsurface water and redirects it before it saturates the soil above. When fully installed, a French drain can be covered with soil or mulch to blend into the surrounding landscape or left as an exposed gravel channel.

Catch Basins. Where surface water concentrates into a low point, a catch basin with a fitted grate collects that flow and routes it into the underground pipe system. Catch basins work well at the base of slopes, at the foot of downspout extensions, and in low spots within hardscape areas.

Atrium Grates. In areas with heavy leaf fall or organic debris that would clog a flat grate, an atrium-style grate — with a raised dome profile — keeps the collection opening clear longer.

Channel Drains. For driveways, pool surrounds, and court areas where water sheets across a wide paved surface, channel drains capture the full runoff width and move it to a collection point.

Plants for Erosion Control

Organic solutions work alongside drainage infrastructure. Mulch is the first layer of defense in any planting bed. Native plants develop extensive root systems that stabilize slopes and improve infiltration. Ground covers and creeping grasses provide surface-level stabilization:

  • Juniperus horizontalis (Creeping Juniper)
  • Vinca minor (Periwinkle)
  • Pachysandra terminalis (Japanese Spurge)
  • Ophiopogon japonicus (Mondo Grass)
  • Phlox stolonifera (Creeping Phlox)

Trees with deep, spreading root systems anchor slopes at a scale that smaller plants cannot replicate. In areas with significant grade, combining structural drainage with tree planting provides the most durable long-term protection.

Additional Products

Geotextile fabric placed beneath drainage rock or gravel prevents the stone from migrating into the soil over time while allowing water to pass through freely. Grass paver panels allow vehicle or foot traffic across areas where water infiltration is needed.
