Low voltage systems operate at 12 volts, do not require an electrical license in most jurisdictions, and use components that are designed for DIY installation. The design decisions — what to light, where to place fixtures, how to power the system — have more impact on the final result than the fixtures themselves.
Define the Purpose First
Before selecting any products, identify what the lighting needs to accomplish. Common goals include illuminating outdoor seating areas for evening use, spotlighting landscape or architectural features for visual interest, lighting pathways and steps for safety, and improving the property's appearance after dark.
The design should serve those specific purposes. A system planned around what a homeowner actually does in the yard after dark will perform better than one based on a standard fixture layout.
Site Considerations
Where the power source is located determines how the transformer is positioned and how wire runs are planned. Most low voltage systems connect to a standard outdoor GFCI outlet — confirm the outlet location and condition before finalizing the transformer placement.
Future plans for the space matter too. If a patio expansion or planting change is anticipated in the next few years, wire routing and transformer capacity should account for additional fixtures rather than being sized exactly to current needs.
Local Requirements
Some jurisdictions require a licensed electrician on lighting projects regardless of voltage. Dark sky ordinances restrict fixture type, light output direction and color temperature in areas where light pollution is regulated. Coastal zones in some states impose specific requirements to protect sea turtle nesting areas. HOA guidelines may also limit fixture visibility or style.
