Seven Principles of Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping is not about having a bare yard. It is a design approach that reduces water demand while supporting plant health and long-term landscape performance.

Xeriscaping applies a set of coordinated design and management principles to reduce or eliminate supplemental irrigation. The approach originated in water-stressed regions but applies broadly — anywhere that reducing water use, improving plant health or lowering maintenance demand is a priority. The seven principles below form the foundation.

1. Planning and Design

Start with the site. Map sun exposure, slope, drainage patterns and soil conditions before selecting any plants or specifying any irrigation. Group plants by water requirement so that irrigation zones can be matched to plant needs — a zone serving drought-tolerant natives should not run on the same schedule as a zone serving annuals.

2. Soil Improvement

Soil structure determines how well the landscape holds and transmits water. Amending soil with compost improves water retention in sandy profiles and drainage in clay-heavy ones. Both deficiencies respond to the same material. Better soil structure reduces the volume of irrigation water needed to maintain adequate moisture at the root zone.

3. Practical Turf Areas

Turf carries the highest water demand of most residential landscape elements. Limiting turf to areas where it serves a functional purpose — active use, play, foot traffic — and replacing ornamental or low-use turf strips with low-water ground cover is one of the highest-impact changes available in a xeriscape redesign.

4. Appropriate Plant Selection

Native plants adapted to the local climate, soil and rainfall pattern establish quickly and require minimal supplemental water once rooted. Drought-tolerant ornamentals offer similar resilience in non-native plantings. Both categories reduce long-term irrigation demand and are typically more resistant to local pest and disease pressure.

5. Efficient Irrigation

Where irrigation is necessary, deliver it precisely. Drip systems and low-volume emitters apply water at the root zone and reduce evaporation and surface runoff compared with overhead spray. Smart controllers that adjust schedules based on weather data or soil moisture eliminate the most common form of irrigation waste — running the system when conditions do not require it.

6. Mulching

A 2-to-4-inch mulch layer over planting beds reduces surface evaporation, moderates soil temperature, slows runoff and suppresses weed growth. Organic mulches contribute to soil health as they break down. Inorganic mulches — gravel, decomposed granite — provide the same moisture and temperature benefits in applications where a natural material is not appropriate.

7. Appropriate Maintenance

A well-designed xeriscape requires maintenance — just less of it. Seasonal irrigation schedule adjustment, mulch replenishment and pruning to maintain plant form are the primary ongoing tasks. The system performs best when the maintenance routine is consistent rather than reactive.
