There are no federal regulations governing residential stormwater management. Requirements exist at the state and local level and vary significantly. In some jurisdictions, any project that adds impervious surface above a certain threshold triggers stormwater management requirements. Seasonal Timing
Drainage demand peaks during regional rainy seasons and spring thaws. Planning and installing drainage solutions before peak season — rather than in response to flooding — produces better outcomes at lower stress. In most regions, the window between late winter and early spring is the ideal time to assess properties and address drainage deficiencies before the high-demand period begins.
The Core Principle: Store, Slow, Spread, Sink
Effective stormwater management follows four objectives in sequence. Store collected water to reduce peak runoff volume. Slow runoff velocity to prevent erosion. Spread flow across a wider area to distribute the infiltration load. Sink water into the soil wherever conditions allow, to recharge groundwater and minimize the volume that requires above-ground management.
No special equipment is required beyond what most landscaping and hardscape work already demands. The planning and product selection are the variables that determine whether a drainage system performs correctly.
