Standing Water on Patios and Pool Decks: Drainage Solutions That Work
Customers with chronic standing water on their patios or around pool decks are dealing with a drainage problem, not a weather problem. The water is not going away on its own — and the longer it sits, the more damage it does. Mold, mildew staining, slip hazards, mosquito breeding and gradual hardscape erosion are the most common consequences.
Channel Drains for Large Paved Areas
Channel drains — also called trench drains — run along the surface of the hardscape and capture sheet runoff across a wide area. The drain body sits flush with the surrounding surface. Water flows in through a slot or grate along the top, travels through the drain body, and exits through a connected underground drainpipe.
Channel drains are the right solution for large, paved surfaces like pool decks, driveways and expansive patios where water volume is high, and the surface needs to move a lot of runoff quickly.
Installation note: the hardscape must slope toward the drain. A channel drain in a flat field does not work. If the existing surface slopes away from the drain location, the drain location needs to move or the surface needs regrading.
Pipe Grates for Smaller or Landscaped Areas
Where runoff volume is lower — around walkways, small lawn areas or landscaped beds — a pipe grate is a simpler and less invasive solution. Grates fit directly onto standard drainpipe and can be connected in series to collect flow from multiple low points. Water enters through the grate, travels through the pipe and discharges to a downstream outlet or infiltration point.
Like channel drains, pipe grates need to be positioned where the runoff actually collects and the surface around them should be graded toward the grate opening. Clear them of leaf litter and debris during maintenance visits.
Catch Basins and Dry Wells for Perimeter Control
For patios and pool decks where the goal is to intercept runoff at the perimeter before it reaches adjacent landscape areas, a catch basin and drainpipe system provides targeted interception. The basin captures surface flow at a defined collection point and routes it downstream through underground pipe to a discharge outlet or an infiltration system.
Dry wells are a common discharge destination in areas where piping to a street, swale or property edge is not practical. A properly sized dry well stores the captured volume temporarily and allows it to percolate into the surrounding soil over time.
